Sol Melia Elevates Dominican Luxury Stakes

Spanish hotelier rolls out upscale 'Reserve' concept as Westin, high-end resorts loomBy William Ng - The Dominican Republic, namely Punta Cana and Cap Cana, has seen an upmarket hospitality push beyond its bargain all-inclusive roots in recent years. That transformation, propelled by foreign investment, should reach critical mass upon the arrivals of luxury resorts by Westin, Ritz-Carlton, Trump, and Four Seasons starting this year. The oncoming rush of high-end U.S. and Canadian chains to the D.R. market, with their brand-name familiarity to U.S. meeting planners, has not been lost on incumbent Spanish hoteliers like Sol Melia Hotels & Resorts, which introduced the luxury all-inclusive Paradisus Palma Real resort in Punta Cana in 2005. Even though the 554-suite Palma Real has earned membership in the Leading Hotels of the World, Sol Melia knows the stakes are now higher and is upping the ante with an exclusive resort-within-resort concept called the Reserve.Whereas the Palma Real—whose business is 25 percent groups and 80 percent U.S.-based—represents the new generation of Sol Melia's Paradisus Resorts brand, the Reserve—with its 807- and 1,077-sf suites and uber-service—is the company's top-echelon product.Launched just before Christmas, the 190-suite Reserve at Palma Real follows upon a sister Reserve property located within the older, nearby Paradisus Punta Cana resort. "Exclusivity, luxury service, secludedness, and modern elegance are the selling points," said Joseph de Leon, director of groups and conventions, during a property tour by MeetingNews. While all 12,500 sf of resort meeting space (including a 9,367-sf ballroom) is at Palma Real, the Reserve is a five-minute transfer by resort trolley shuttle. Attendees at the Reserve have access to Palma Real's seven restaurants, Bavaro Beach, casino, recreational facilities, and 8,600-sf YHI Spa.The Reserve has oversized suites that feature dark mahogany furniture, marble floors, bathrooms with dual bowl sinks and European showers, two flat-screen TVs, two Jacuzzis (indoor and outdoor), and a private terrace and garden that abuts a communal swimming pool. The suites are one feature Palma Real officials said will keep Sol Melia a step ahead of the Westin Roko Ki Beach & Golf Resort (opening in 2010 and geographically closest to Palma Real out of the North American properties in construction)."I don't know if any property has that," said resident manager Frank Peeters, of the "swim-up suites." (Reserve guests literally can swim back to their rooms from the swim-up bar at the Gabi Club restaurant.)Another feature is a sprawling, 24,400-sf YHI Spa, themed after Hindu deities and featuring atrium architecture with 10 treatment rooms with outdoor rain showers, a salon, hydrotherapy facilities, and an attached fitness club. The full-service spa offers full-day rituals and long rosters of facials and massages, such as the Mandala Experience that combines aromatherapy and stone muscle treatment. In March, a splash pool will join the sizeable 7,800-sf Kids Zone as part of the Reserve's children's amenities accommodating family-oriented meetings and incentives. The staffed Kids Zone, which itself is adding a playground, is a "mini-compound" with Internet terminals, PlayStation 3 consoles, board games, and a big-screen TV. Additional, personalized assistance is provided by the "Family Concierge," private butlers who can coordinate kids' activities and set up turndown touches like a balloon-filled Jacuzzi.

Hong Kong

Gleaming skyscrapers, vivid explosions of fireworks and bustling, sign-filled streets - the glamorous postcard images of Hong Kong are only part of the story. It’s the people who wrote it that make this exciting city utterly fascinating.

Almost 7 million people live, work and play in this former British colony. To be exact, the territory has a total area of 1,104 sq km (426 sq miles) and comprises four main areas: Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula, the New Territories, and 235 outlying islands. It sounds expansive; but about 70 per cent of the total area, surprisingly, still remains remote and rural.

Morocco

With a magical view of Egypt’s ancient pyramids and the River Nile, guests can escape to a welcoming and authentic Arabian sanctuary. Whether your feet are tired from taking in the nearby ancient sites, or from hours of shopping at the haute couture boutiques and galleries of the First Residence complex, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence’s Spa & Wellness Centre will certainly help to ease away any tension.

At the spa’s entrance, the sense of Arabian opulence is immediately apparent with traditional details sitting comfortably alongside modern spa conveniences. Beauty was of great importance to the ancient Egyptians. They are known for pampering their bodies with creams and oils and their desire for cleanliness and hygiene provided a basis for beautifying rituals. Beauty, according to traditional Egyptian philosophy, embraces both the inner and outer self. Befittingly, you will find this holistic approach in all of the treatments.

Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris

The most fashionable address in Paris, Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris takes its name from avenue George V. A stone’s throw away from the city’s most fabulous landmarks: the Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde and the Eiffel Tower, the hotel is located just off the Champs-Elysées.

Opened in 1928 as simply The George V, the hotel shot to international acclaim as the pinnacle of European hospitality. The word ‘hotel’was deliberately omitted from its original name to announce a new standard of accommodation, that of a gracious private residence. Through the decades, noble heads of state, wealthy financiers and legendary glitterati have called the hotel home.

Pearl Continental Hotel Bhurban: Staying at PC Bhurban

My wife and I went to the Pearl Continental in Bhurban and spent our honeymoon there. There is a pick-and-drop service from Islamabad airport to the hotel for which they charge PKR 200 (at least back then), ie almost 5 years ago.

The hotel itself is wonderful. You wouldn't believe that it's possible to build such a luxury hotel that really deserves a five-star rating in the middle of the mountains in such a remote area. The surroundings of Bhurban are absolutely breathtaking. The perfect location for spending your honeymoon.

On top of that, they have excellent restaurants in the hotel where you get everything from local Pakistani food to International cuisine. (I even had Schnitzel there, which is a typically Austrian dish)

My special recommendation: Try the apple juice at PC Bhurban. It's made from fresh apples of the region and you will never forget it's taste.

The PC Bhurban has all you need and much more. There's a pool, sauna, bowling alley, computer game room, lush green garden, wonderful mountain-view, excellent rooms and service, great food, pick-and-drop from Islamabad and the list goes on and on.

Marriott Islamabad: Living the High-Life

By far the 'swishest' hotel in Islamabad, the Marriott is the top choice for business people, diplomats and welathy tourists (i.e not my type!). A sea of brass, marble and five-star hotel clientelle.

We were treated to 'high-tea' and dinner here by our trekking company's owner. Another bouns was being allowed to use the swimming pool as guests of our trekking company friend, we got pool passes for about Rs. 500 but it was so worth it after a day of walking the sultry heat and dust of the City. Mind you, the pool was 30 degress, with the air temperature 38 degrees (celcius - that's HOT for any who aren't familiar with celcius) so the swim was only marinally refreshing! As for the accommodation itself - not really sure what it's like, but looking at the Marriott website, you won't get much change from US$200

The History of Hotels: From Economic To Extravagant

Evidence of hotels and the hospitality industry have been recorded as far back as biblical times when Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem during the census. As the Bible depicts, Mary and Joseph were refused accommodations because there "was no room at the inn." Since the beginning of time, people have traveled for commerce, religion, family, health, immigration, education and recreation.

As cited by Texas Tech University, the word "hospitality" comes from the Latin root meaning "host" or "hospice." The university further noted that the first hotels were nothing more than private homes opened to the public. Most, unfortunately, had poor reputations. Under the influence of the Roman Empire, inns and hotels began catering to the pleasure traveler in an effort to encourage visitors.

The first inn located in America was recorded in the year 1607 and lead the way with many other firsts in the hospitality industry. The first publicly held hotel (the City Hotel) opened in New York in 1792. The first modern hotel (the Tremont) opened in Boston in 1809 and the first business hotel (the Buffalo Statler) opened in 1908.

From there a surge of hotels flooded American and the rest of the world with prominent names such as Radisson, Marriot and Hilton.

Price, Service, Amenities

Hotels (as well as other forms of accommodations) are generally segmented by the services and amenities offered. These two factors, along with location, also have a bearing on the price range.
Budget hotels offer clean albeit simple rooms that provide the basics of places to sleep and shower. Usually budget hotels are designed for travelers looking to maximize their funds and minimize expenses. Prices can range from $20US per night to $70US per night.
Business hotels offer a high standard by providing rooms equipped with what business travelers would consider necessities. Usually found in business-class hotel rooms are high speed Internet connections, alarm clocks, comfortable beds, irons and ironing boards, coffee makers, complimentary newspaper delivery and hairdryers. Rates can range from $80US per night to $250US per night.
The facility of a business hotel would also offer an in-house restaurant, bar, exercise room and shuttle service to nearby airports. Limit concierge assistance is often included as well as room service, laundry and dry cleaning and wake-up calls.
Luxury hotels are known for their lavish decor and extraordinary service. With superior amenities, accommodations at luxury hotels are designed to thoroughly pamper and impress guests. According to a Business Week Online article, those in the luxury market are getting harder to please stating that luxury goods and service providers can't afford to blunder with the level of service and customer experience they provide. For this reason, many luxury hotels go far beyond the norm by providing a lifestyle experience equal to or better than what guests have become accustomed to at home.
Luxury hotels frequently offer full-service day spas, five-star restaurants staffed by world-class chefs, ballrooms, lavish pools, golf packages and guest services that are unsurpassed by any other class of hotel. In addition, luxury rooms generally include those amenities found in business class hotels plus in-room safes, goose down comforters and pillows, marble showers and tubs, larger rooms, separate sitting or living area and fog-free bathroom mirrors. Rates can range from $129US per night to $2,000US per night.

Rates vary greatly depending on location and proximity to popular events and attractions.

There are other classifications of hotels, however, most will fall into one of these three or a combination of these three. With the lines between business and personal becoming more blurred, many entrepreneurs and business executives will attend conferences or embark on business trips with family in tow. Hotels are aware of this common occurrence and have become adept at providing facilities and services both business and recreational travelers enjoy.
Choosing a Hotel

Because of the diversity of hotels a rating system, based on stars, was created. However, rating systems don't all carry the same definitions. For instance, the American Automobile Association (AAA) in the United States regularly reviews and rates facilities with a scale based on one star to five stars. The ratings reflect specific written standards set forth by AAA. Travelers who are familiar with this system will know what to expect when booking a reservation at a hotel rated on this scale.

But in Europe or Latin America, ratings systems (if they exist) are widely scattered and unorganized. The same applied to most online travel booking sites that apply their own "star" system, which is not related to AAA.

If the facility is unfamiliar, rather than rely on a ratings system that could be unfounded, look to online review sites for help or ask friends or business associates for recommendations.

From their humble beginnings in spare rooms of private homes to the most plush, opulent and service-oriented facilities available, hotels have evolve into temporary housing for people of all classes who travel. With such a diverse selection, finding a hotel that caters to your needs, on your level can be the defining point in a holiday or business trip
